What is Business Doing for Her?
By Cate O’Kane, Director of Corporate Partnerships and Philanthropy, PSI
To achieve the financial and social impact needed for change, disruptive business models have to be developed. There are new ways of working with partners, who were once seen as odd bedfellows for the social sector, including concepts that embrace market forces. At PSI, our forward-thinking partners are increasingly developing ways to work in markets where millions of women and girls are often still untapped consumers. Ensuring aligned values of dignity, choice and empowerment, these corporations are pushing the boundaries of traditional philanthropy to create programs that blend purpose and profit to empower women on their way to healthier lives.
“Merck for Mothers is most proud of supporting women to be change agents. Take Mama Angel, a private midwife in Uganda, who is both an entrepreneur and a popular role model for girls in her community. Merck for Mothers provides human and financial resources to support Mama Angel and in turn she ensures that women receive quality care and inspires girls, women and their families to dream big.”

We proudly partner with the organization of African first ladies against HIV/AIDS. Since 2015, Alere has donated 200,000 HIV/syphilis duo rapid tests to countries in Africa to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV/aids and syphilis, help pregnant women and adolescent girls know their hiv status and reduce child mortality.”

Advancing the health of women and girls is at the foundation of two Lilly NCD Partnership programs in Brazil. Working with local experts, the first focuses on preventing post partem type 2 diabetes in women with gestational diabetes. The second program involves education to reduce hospitalization for children newly diagnosed with diabetes. Without health, everything falls apart.

“As a leader in diabetes care we work to prevent, treat and ultimately cure diabetes. By creating awareness of the linkages between diabetes and pregnancy, Novo Nordisk contributes to improving maternal and child health and lowering the future burden of diabetes and other chronic diseases.”
RIKKE FABIENKE, GLOBAL PROJECT MANAGER, CHANGING DIABETES IN PREGNANCY, NOVO NORDISK
“Our global commitment begins by finding ways to break down barriers to healthcare by improving immunization delivery and increasing access to family planning services. Ensuring healthy families helps lift the burden on women and girls, providing them with opportunities to learn and work and breaking the perpetual cycle of poverty.”
